Testing & Performance

Are Panda’s products AAMA and NFRC certified?

Panda’s products have been engineered to meet the most stringent industry standards, including AAMA and NFRC certification. We’ve designed systems across the spectrum of performance, some intended for indoor-only applications, while others have been engineered to withstand hurricane-force winds, wind-borne debris strikes, and water infiltration. Check out our Impact Rated and Thermally Broken products for systems that meet the highest AAMA and NFRC certification standards.

What are AAMA and NFRC certifications?

AAMA and NFRC are two major certifying bodies for windows and doors.

AAMA certification means a product meets strict standards for quality, durability, safety, and performance. To earn AAMA certification, a window or door must pass strenuous testing at an independent accredited lab under extreme conditions. The test evaluates:

  • Water leakage
  • Air leakage
  • Structural strength
  • Forced entry performance
  • Lifecycle durability
  • Component performance

NFRC certification focuses on energy efficiency. To get NFRC certified, a product goes through an 11-step testing process followed by computer-generated models for validation. The test evaluates:

  • U-Factor (insulating ability)
  • Visible transmittance (VT)
  • Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC)
  • Air leakage

Earning high marks on AAMA and NFRC testing demonstrates a window or door is high-quality, durable, secure, and energy efficient.

What does U-Factor mean?

The U-Factor is a measure of how well a window or door insulates an indoor space. While the U-Factor can take any value, in general, it ranges from 0.20 to 1.20. The lower the U-Factor, the better the insulation.

What does SHGC mean?

The Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) is a measure of how much heat from sunlight passes through the window or door, and is largely dependent on the type of glass used. SHGC ranges in value from 0 to 1, with lower values blocking more solar heat.

Are Panda’s products Title 24 compliant?

There is no such thing as a ‘Title 24 Compliant’ product. Rather, compliance is earned by doing a comprehensive calculation of a building’s overall proposed energy use and submitting the energy report for state approval.

Panda’s energy efficient products can help projects achieve the energy efficiency needed to meet Title 24 compliance. Full compliance requires working closely with your local authorized Panda dealer or Panda representative, as well as a local energy consultant, to produce the complete Title 24 Energy Calculation for your project. Panda's energy efficient products can be an important piece in reaching Title 24 compliance, but many factors go into the full calculation.

What is Title 24?

The California Energy Code, also known as Title 24, was created by the California Building Standards Commission in 1978 under SB 331 which mandated that building standards be unified in a single code within the California Code of Regulations. Specifically, Title 24 Part 6 is the part of the code that addresses the energy efficiency of residential and non-residential buildings with the goal of reducing California’s energy consumption.

The newest version of Title 24 requires submitting an energy report, also known as Title 24 Energy Calculation, to demonstrate compliance before obtaining a building permit from the state.

To meet Title 24 compliance, the state of California offers two methods, a Prescriptive and a Performance method. Both require detailed calculations about the proposed energy of the project. However, for customized high-end residential and commercial projects, the Performance method offers more flexibility in design with fewer restrictions on glass.

To get started on Title 24 compliance, contact your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative. In addition to working with Panda’s team on your project, you will need to work closely with an energy consultant in your area with access to a specialized state-approved software program needed to generate the detailed Title 24 Energy Calculation.

For more information on the updated Title 24 energy code, visit the California Energy Commission's website at energy.ca.gov.

Do Panda’s products contribute to LEED® points?

Absolutely! The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) green building certification program awards credits for sustainable practices that improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions, conserve water and resources, and enhance occupant health. Panda's energy efficient products can help projects earn valuable LEED points in several credit categories.

Our thermally broken windows and doors maximize energy efficiency, reducing heat loss in the winter, and heat gain in the summer to lower HVAC costs. This supports LEED credits for Optimize Energy Performance and Enhanced Commissioning. Our metal frame designs also contribute to credits for reduced environmental impact of materials.

In addition, options like triple glazing, Low-E coatings, and argon gas fills further improve U-factors and solar heat gain coefficients (SHGC). This helps projects achieve even more points under the LEED Energy and Atmosphere section.

By using our energy efficient products, Panda can assist projects pursuing LEED certification. Our energy efficient windows and doors support green building practices recognized by the US Green Building Council's (USGBC) rating system.

What is a ‘thermally broken’ system?

A 'thermally broken' system refers to an extrusion that has been intentionally split or interrupted with a non-conductive composite material to prevent heat transfer. This thermal break prevents summertime heat from conducting into the building and wintertime indoor from escaping outside. The thermal break reflects heat back to its source, creating a more energy efficient enclosed space. Thermally broken windows and doors reduce heating and cooling needs to create energy efficient and cost-saving spaces.

Are Panda’s products STC and/or OITC rated?

While Panda's products do not carry official STC or OITC ratings, we utilize high-performance acoustic glazing for enhanced soundproofing and can achieve virtually any STC/OITC rating needed. Speak with your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative to discuss the acoustic performance required for your project.

What are STC and OITC ratings?

Sound transmission class (STC) and Outdoor/Indoor Transmission Class (OITC) are the standard methods for measuring and rating how much sound is transmitted through a window or door. Higher STC and OITC ratings indicate more complete sound absorption and sound deadening performance.

The primary factor impacting sound transmission is the type of glass utilized - the number of panes, thickness, gas fillings, and spacer type. Multiple panes, thicker glass, inert gas, and robust spacers optimize soundproofing. For projects requiring strict STC or OITC ratings, we use high-performance acoustic glazing to minimize sound transmission.

Are Panda’s products commercial-grade?

Yes. Our products have been designed to meet strict building codes and can withstand the heavy use typical of commercial spaces. You can find Panda’s products across hotels & resorts, restaurants, sports stadiums, entertainment venues, universities, retail shops, and more. Check out the Clientele & Testimonials page to see a list of some of our commercial projects.

Are Panda’s products suitable for coastal applications?

Yes. We offer Impact Rated (High-Velocity Hurricane Zone approved) systems and high-performance finishes that are specific to harsh coastal applications. Check out our Impact Rated products and Finishes page to learn more about the products and finishes best suited for coastal applications. Want to learn more? Speak with your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative who can help you configure a system specific to your climate.

What weather resistance do Panda’s products provide?

We offer a wide range of products suitable for different climates. For best thermal efficiency, check out our Thermally Broken products designed to provide the highest degree of insulation from temperature changes. For protection against the most extreme weather events, check out our Impact Rated products, designed to withstand hurricane-force winds, wind-borne debris strikes, and water infiltration using advanced weatherstripping and structural reinforcements.

Are Panda’s products energy efficient?

Yes. We combine our state-of-the-art thermally broken systems with high-performance Low-E glass coatings and advanced weatherstripping to provide energy efficient windows and doors suitable for any climate. Our team can help you configure your systems to meet any U-value or SHGC specification your project demands.

Maximum energy efficiency in mind:

  • Thermally broken frames: Our frames use a thermally insulating core to prevent heat transfer between the inside and outside. This design significantly reduces thermal gain in the summer and heat loss in the winter, maintaining a comfortable climate indoors and lowering your energy bills.
  • High-performance glazing: Panda’s experts can recommend a variety of different energy efficient glass options, including Low-E coatings, multiple panes (such as double- or triple-glazed glass), or insulating gas fills to help create the right degree of energy efficiency for your project. These added features help reflect heat back to its source, keeping your home cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
  • Airtight seals: Precision-engineered seals minimize air leaks around your windows and doors, preventing drafts and further improving energy efficiency.

For in-warranty parts, you only pay for shipping and handling. For out-of-warranty parts, you'll be responsible for the cost of the part plus shipping and handling.

How do I clean and maintain my Panda products?

Keeping your Panda products looking their best is easy. Check out the Care & Maintenance Guide for recommended and mandatory cleaning procedures, schedules, and best practices to follow. If properly maintained, Panda products will provide a lifetime of use and beauty.

Can I replace just the glass?

In most cases, yes. Even if your system is out of Warranty, we’ll be happy to help you order the right custom-sized glass for your system. And if you’re still covered by the Warranty, we can assist in installing the replacement glass. Submit a Service Request form or contact your Panda representative to discuss your options.

What about ‘spontaneous glass breakage’?

There are a few reasons why glass may shatter spontaneously, even when no impact occurs. Tiny impurities like nickel sulfide inclusions, internal stresses from the manufacturing process, thermal fluctuations, and the natural aging of glass over time can all contribute to spontaneous breakage. If an independent glass expert verifies your broken glass underwent spontaneous failure, the glass manufacturer may fully cover replacement costs. To get the replacement process started, take photos of the broken glass before cleaning up, then promptly contact your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative. Since large custom-sized glass panels require several weeks to manufacture and deliver, it's important to begin the process as soon as possible.

Are site inspections available?

Site inspections can typically be arranged with Panda's local representatives. To inquire about availability and schedule an inspection, please contact your Panda representative directly.

Delivery & Installation

Does Panda offer installation?

Panda manufactures custom-made luxury window and door products but does not provide installation.

Who can install Panda products?

Panda products can be installed by licensed third-party contractors in your area. Your local authorized Panda Dealer may also provide installation in some cases. Importantly, Panda does not require installers to be "certified" or “factory-authorized” for the product warranty to remain valid. As long as the installer has experience with large window and door installations or holds proper general licensing, such as a C-17 license or AAMA certification, the product warranty will be honored. The key is using an experienced or licensed, professional installer, not necessarily one vetted or trained by Panda. Speak with your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative for recommendations on qualified installers in your area.

Does Panda have certified installers?

Panda does not certify installers but simply requires adherence to best practices and relevant sections of the Care & Maintenance guide. Speak with your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative for recommendations on qualified installers in your area.

Where are products delivered?

Products can be delivered anywhere. Products can be delivered directly to the job site or delivered to a staging area and stored until the job site is ready for window and door installation. The best delivery destination depends on the project timeline and installation schedule. Speak with your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative to determine the best delivery destination for your project.

Why is my order delayed?

Manufacturing custom-made luxury windows and doors is an intricate process that doesn't always go according to schedule. Each system is carefully crafted to exact specifications and must pass through rigorous QC along the way. If we detect any flaws or defects, we halt production to make corrections or completely re-manufacture if necessary. Maintaining the highest-degree of QC sometimes causes delays, but ensures you receive the flawless product you expect. Other factors like delayed arrival of specific hardware, paint, or glass can also lead to delays. We'll keep you updated on the progress of your project as it moves through manufacturing and notify you if any delays are anticipated.

How are products packaged?

Each product is wrapped using a combination of soft and rigid packaging materials before being carefully placed into custom-made, reinforced crates. These crates are designed to fit the product snugly, ensuring maximum protection during transport. Whether your products are shipped within the continental U.S. or internationally, you can rest assured that your order will arrive safely.

What comes with my order?

Panda products are sold as complete systems ready for installation. Orders include:

  • Frame
  • Sill

What if my products arrive damaged?

If your products arrive damaged:

  1. Refuse delivery of the damaged items. Make sure the delivery driver notes the damage before returning the items.
  2. Take clear photos of the damage to the products and their packaging. The more photos the better.
  3. Contact your local authorized Panda Dealer or Panda representative right away with photos and a description of the damage.

We will work quickly to send replacement items or remedy the issue so you can enjoy your Panda products as intended.

  5. Make Final Adjustments:
    • Make any final adjustments before installing stucco, drywall, or trim.
    • For Lift & Slide systems, ensure that the tolerance on the top or bottom track does not exceed 1/16".
    • For top-hung systems (HSWs and some Folding Doors), ensure the header has less than 1/4" deflection.
  6. Protect During Construction:
    • Protect the door, hardware, glass, and sills from accidental damage during construction.
    • For Lift & Slide systems, remove the handle until construction is complete.
  7. Post-Installation Care:
    • Follow the Care & Maintenance Guide for recommended and mandatory cleaning procedures, schedules, and best practices to follow.

Products containing wood are delivered unfinished, meaning they do not include primer, stain, or paint. The wood is stain-grade quality, providing you with the flexibility to apply your desired finish. The following are recommended wood finishing tips:

  • To prevent swelling and warping caused by fluctuations in temperature and moisture, it is essential to apply a high-quality finish to all wood surfaces within 7 days of delivery.
  • For best results, we recommend that all wood finishing is done before installation.
  • Prepare the wood by lightly sanding it to remove minor nicks, scratches, debris, and surface glaze. This process not only smooths the surface but also opens the wood's pores, enhancing its ability to absorb stain and finish for a richer, deeper color.
  • Carefully tape off adjacent hardware before applying sealant to prevent hardware damage.
  • Apply wood finish in a workspace that provides adequate light, is well-ventilated, warm, and dry.

Simple two-step finishing procedure:

  • Stain the wood and allow the stain to completely dry before applying a clear protective finish. Applying the clear protective finish before the stain has completely dried will result in chipping or peeling of the finish.
  • Stains and clear protective finishes may be applied with clean rags, cloth, soft brushes, and other applicators. For best results, read the sealant manufacturer guidelines for the recommended applicator.
  • Reapply a finish periodically to refresh appearance and protect your wood for long-lasting results.

Please consult with your installer or wood finishing professional, and follow the guidelines provided by the coating manufacturer for final instructions. Wood cladding must be inspected annually for damage resulting from exposure to the elements and repaired immediately.

What are the deflection criteria for top-hung systems?

The maximum allowable deflection of the structural header across the full width of the opening should not exceed 1/16". Exceeding this deflection limit can lead to glass breakage, seal failure, and interference with the proper operation of the sash and hardware. Proper structural support and deflection control are critical design factors for successful top-hung systems.

What is the structural support requirement for top-hung systems?

When using standard 1" overall thickness glass, the frame and supporting structure should be designed to support at least 10 pounds per square foot. Proper structural support is critical to ensure the top-hung system functions properly.

What fasteners do I use to install the system?

There are no specific fasteners that are best suited for Panda’s products. The key is choosing fasteners suitable for the substrate you are installing into and the expected wind load conditions for your location. We recommend working with your structural engineer to determine the appropriate fasteners to use for your particular project.

Do systems include nail fins for installation?

No, Panda’s systems do not include nail fins for installation because of their weight. Instead, the frames must be securely anchored directly into the structure to provide maximum strength and rigidity.
